How to Calculate Your Grade Point Average (GPA)

Your grade point average (GPA) is calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credits attempted. Your grade point average may range from 0.0 to a 4.0.

For example:

A = 4 grade points
B = 3 grade points
C = 2 grade points
D = 1 grade point
F = 0 grade points

P/NP (Pass/No Pass) courses are not factored in the student's GPA
I (Incompletes) and W (Withdrawals) do not receive grade points and do not have an effect on the GPA

First you need to add all the credits up. Then add up the points based on credits. How to add up the points: if you have 3 credits that earned an A then you need to add the points for the A three times. Example: if A is worth 4 points and you earned 3 credits in the course, then add 4 three times. Or just multiply 4x3= 12

What you are really doing is using the credit to tell you how many times you need to add the letter grade points. Like how many times you must add the letter grade A ? Well, if the credit is 3 then you add the letter grade A’s points three times. So letter grade A is worth 4 points so you add 4+4+4 = 12 the twelve will then be your total grade points.

Another Example of the one above :

Cource Credits Points Total grade points

Biology 3 credits X 4 points = 12 Total Point

Physical Ed .5 credits X 3 points =1.5 We had to cut the points in half because we do not have a whole credit.

English 101 3 credits X 2 points = 6 Total Points

Math 3 credits X 0 points = 0 Total Points

Music .5 credits X 3 points =1.5 We had to cut the points in half because we do not have a whole credit.

Grand total of 10 credits divided by 21 total points = 2.1 GPA

To get the example student's GPA, the total grade points are divided by the total credit hours attempted.

Example:

Total Grade Points 21

Divided by

Total Credits Attempted 10

GPA score of 2.10

Remember: If you have a credit of .5 then cut the grade point in half. Example

Subject Final Grade Credit

Physical Education 93-100 = A .5 The grade A is worth 4 points. So we cut 4 in half to get 2 same as:

Music 85-92 = B .5 The grade B is worth 3 points and we need to cut the 3 in half so we now get 1.5

When adding this to get your points, you would normally give this a point 4 because it’s an A 93-100 grade mark. Instead you need to give it only half the points. So only give it a 2 instead of the 4 because it‘s not a full credit.
